The Island Illustrators Society Annual New Years theme show for 2012: "A Traveling Illustrated Alphabet"
During the summer, the Island Illustrators Society was contacted by the Greater Victoria Public Library, with an offer to display at the Juan de Fuca branch. We had just finished our 25th Anniversary celebrations, two shows and two book launches, but the library venue quickly inspired our members — and the little library spark grew into a plan for an illustrated alphabet. The enthusiasm for the theme has been wonderful. (That's how you can tell a group of full-fledged illustrators!) The first letters that members are working on will spell out the words 'Happy New Year', sending greetings far and wide through the pages of the Times Colonist. We are very grateful to the T/C who have been kindly covering our theme shows for many years.
This is a group that loves an illustration challenge. The Island Illustrators Society has been holding an Annual New Years show since its inception 25 years ago. Our first New Years event was held at Market Square — and since then, the group has shown at various inspiring venues such as the Royal BC Museum (during the Emily Carr Exhibit and Circus Magicus), Craigdarroch Castle, St. Ann's Academy, and the Empress Hotel.
This season members are busily creating 8 x 8 alphabet pieces with a Canadian nature theme. The first ‘Happy New Years’ message show will run from Jan 4 to 31, 2012 at the Juan de Fuca branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library at 1759 Island Highway. The venue is wheelchair friendly and open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday until 5 p.m. For more venue info contact the library at 250-391-1759
Come February, the complete “Travelling Illustrated Alphabet” Exhibit, featuring 26 letters of the alphabet, will begin its journey to various Greater Victoria Public Libraries including the Central branch downtown. Members who have worked on letters for all or some of the alphabet shows include: Suzanne Destaffany, Wendy Picken, Judy Hilgeman, Beth Dunlop, Joanne Thomson, Debora Smith, Karel Doruyter, Kristi Bridgeman, Olga Lang, Robin Hall, Bryony Wynne-Jones, Dawn Joy Ritchie, Ian Finlayson, Jessica Milne, Dianne Bersea, Kathy Cameron, Marcia Semenoff, Iris Churcher, Allegra Vernon and Haren Vakil. The Society also plans to create books or posters with the images.
